Wine tasting September 5, 4-7

Cartlidge & Browne Sauvignon Blanc

The 2012 Sauvignon Blanc was hand picked and sorted from the best vineyards in the Lake County, Alexander Valley, and other North Coast vineyards. It was fermented at cool temperatures in 100% stainless to accentuate the true expression of Sauvignon Blanc. It underwent no malolactic fermentation but was left on its lees from mid September to the end of November, to enhance texture and add complexity.  winemaker’s tasting impressions: Herbaceous and refreshing lemongrass and citrusy green apple greets you upon uncorking this lovely wine. Slight mineral tastes and white peach tease your palate and leave you with a smooth, light finish. Delicate in and out of the bottle, but enough structure to let you know it means business. Try it with whitefish, shell fish, or oysters—it’s delicate enough not to overpower light fish such as trout, halibut, sole or bass. Also excellent with cheese and fruits or a light salad with grilled chicken and a citrus vinaigrette. Its lush citrus and tropical flavors also make it an excellent companion to spicy cuisine.

Cartlidge & Browne Merlot

Winemaker’s Tasting Impressions :The Merlot carries the a complex flavor package and has supple, mellow tannins. Upon opening, candied blackberries dominate the nose. As the wine opens, classic Merlot earthy tones express themselves. Very versatile. This wine is so well balanced with excellent acidity that it will perfectly pair with a number of foods. Will be particularly delicious with a slightly sweet delicious barbequed rack of ribs. Or try with lamb, Tomato based dishes, pork or venison.

Shooting Star Zin

Winemaker Notes: All of the fruit is hand harvested and quickly delivered to the winery.  The grapes are de-stemmed and gently crushed to tanks for fermentation.  We ferment each vineyard lot separately.  Following fermentation we pressed and racked the individual vineyard lots to American oak barrels for 8 months.  Based on our stylistic approach to Shooting Star wines this Zin is lighter and softer than the Old-Vine Steele Zinfandels.  We used approximately 80% neutral barrels and 20% new barrels in order to capture as much of the aroma and flavor of the grape as possible.  This wine has aromas of raspberry and other ripe black fruit, butter, and just a hint of cinnamon and nutmeg.  The tannins and acids in this wine are soft but distinct.  Cedar tones with just a hint of plum make the finish a wonderful explanation point.
