Join us, Friday September 25, 4-7 for our weekly wine tasting. This week we are featuring wines from South Africa. The balloons will be flying!
Beyond Sauvignon Blanc
Buitenverwachting is one of South Africa’s premier estates and whose name means “beyond expectation” in Dutch. A wonderful Sauvignon Blanc from one of the pioneer producers of this varietal in South Africa, “Beyond” offers gooseberry, lime and citrus fruit that explode from the glass with luscious mouth feel and a refreshing grapefruit finish. A great value.
Full bodied-dry red wine with concentrated berry, banana cherry and fruit flavors with a spicy finish. It spends 3-5 days on skins in open fermenters at 29 degrees C, and in oak 12-14 months. The grapes are a blend of Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The vineyard is in the Stellenbosch region, east of Cape Town. This wine pairs well with meat, pasta or spicy dishes. Kanonkop means “Cannon Hill” and is derived from the days when cannons were fired to signal the arrival of Dutch trade ships in to Cape Town Harbor.
Excelsior Cabernet Sauvignon
The De Wets of Excelsior have a proud winemaking tradition dating back to 1697. The calcareous soils of the Robertson area were once used to raise champion thoroughbred horses but now these soils are used to produce fine wines. Crammed with abundant black current aromas, this full-bodied wine is a mouthful of plum flavors. Delightfully versatile, it makes a delicious partner to a variety of foods, including red meats, and rich pasta dishes.
